Tom Lawrence is a Nationally Registered Paramedic and currently serves as the Team Leader of the RI Disaster Medical Assistance Team, Director of the RI Medical Reserve Corps, and is employed as the Emergency Management Coordinator for CharterCARE Health Partners in Providence, where he is responsible for emergency preparedness activities at Roger Williams Medical Center and Our Lady of Fatima Hospital. Mr. Lawrence has lead his team on deployments to major disasters in the United States including Ice Storms in Upstate New York, the World Trade Center, the Postal Anthrax incident in New York City, multiple deployments to hurricanes in the southeast United States, deployment to the Superdome in response to Hurricane Katrina, and to Hurricanes Rita, Gustav, and Ike, among others. In addition to federal deployments, Mr. Lawrence formed the RI Medical Reserve Corps in 2002, and has overseen the growth of the MRC into an able response organization with a prominent role in Disaster Operations and Rhode Island’s Public Health response plans. RI DMAT and the RI Medical Reserve Corps are active partners in Rhode Island’s preparedness activities.
Mr. Lawrence is a frequent presenter at national, regional, and local conferences and has taken an active role in assisting with the Harvard Affiliated EMS/Disaster Medicine Fellowship program for more than three years. The participation of the Fellows in RI DMAT/RI MRC planning and response activities has enabled them to learn how a volunteer response team’s efforts can reinforce the ability of the day-to-day response capability during calls for extraordinary medical care in disasters. Fellows routinely participate during RI DMAT’s training events, including the RI Air National Guard Airshow and Open House, and their innovative approach to the provision of medical care at mass-gathering events in the region.
