Program in Chemical, Biological, Radiological/Nuclear (CBRN) Preparedness and Response

Program Overview

Due to the increasing risk of chemical, biological, radiological/nuclear attack, it is imperative that educational programs in Disaster Medicine and Emergency Management address the unique aspects of these potentially catastrophic events. CBRN disasters can be large in scale, leading to an immediate threat to human life. If part of a larger attack, they can pose significant logistical hurdles to the provision of lifesaving care, and may cause a disruption in the healthcare system, impacting the community’s ability to care for the injured.

Comprehensive training programs for such disasters must include the systematic integration of field HAZMAT and healthcare assets, as well as hospital-based capabilities that are unique to CBRN response. Many CBRN events are intentional, making scene safety and the continuum of multi-agency integration from field to hospital a very significant part of the overall response. In addition, preparedness training should include “left of boom” actions such as building strong relationships with stakeholders, effective hazard mapping, and instruction on how to conduct threat assessments.

The BIDMC Fellowship in Disaster Medicine has evolved into a national and international leader in cutting-edge, innovative educational programs. The program in CBRN Preparedness and Response enhances the knowledge and skill sets of our fellows in this unique area where Disaster Medicine must take a leadership role.
